Full Job Description
We are looking for a Full-Time Roadway Inspector on a project in Birmingham, Alabama who can perform the following duties:
- Works in direct collaboration with the Project Manager for specific assigned duties required in the execution of the work and serves as a coordination resource to the project team.
- Monitors field activities of assigned subcontractors, reports on progress of the work for assigned contractors, and assists in identification and verification of any required remediation activities for non‐conforming work.
- Assists with data recording through daily reports and job site photos, weekly and monthly status reports.
- Becomes familiar with all pertinent Contract documents as well as Project software and controls systems.
- Observes and monitors construction for conformance with the plans, specifications and industry practices.
- Assists the PM in verifying quantities of work performed and materials used, as backup for the progress payments.
- Monitors construction safety and notifies the Contractor’s supervision and HCAA HSE of any observed unsafe practices or conditions. Keeps public safety in mind at all times.
- Reviews look-ahead schedules with Contractors staff (field and office), PM and others to determine upcoming work activities, testing/inspection requirements, equipment needs, coordination requirements, etc. prior to each OAC meeting. Briefs PM on these items.
- Stays familiar with ongoing coordination efforts between projects in the vicinity, as well as tasks within the project limits as work areas shift and progress.
- Immediately notifies PM of any observed out-of-sequence activities, issues of concern, quality issues, etc. and provides recommendations for reconciliation and/or correction.
- Stays familiar with Airport Operations, necessary security protocols and Airport notification processes (e. SIRs, MCNs, NOTAMs, etc.) so that work can continue in a timely manner. Assists PM as needed in these areas with particular attention to upcoming work efforts that require notifications.
- Maintains a photo diary of work in progress and issues of concern that are observed. Submit detailed documentation of daily construction activities and provides copies to PM and/or Project Files on a weekly basis.
- Is available to work extended hours and weekends, as needed, with appropriate notification as work progresses and work schedules dictate.
- Provides open and honest communication to Staff and others as required, both oral and written, depending on the situation at hand. Works closely with PM on dissemination of information.
- Participates in necessary meetings with Contractor and staff as needed including OAC meetings, Safety Meetings, QA/QC Meetings, Pre‐Activity Meetings, Follow‐Up Inspections, etc.
- Identify potential problems and notify the PM of any potential problems.
- Coordinates as-built drawings for the duration of the project.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Thorough knowledge of construction practices, techniques, materials and related equipment
- Thorough knowledge of engineering plans, specifications, and drawings
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills needed for submitting extensive written reports and documentation; construction reports and logs are written and filed daily.
- Must be able to read and interpret plans and specifications and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress, to detect errors in construction projects, establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners and associates.
- Must be able to perform specific installation tasks and field measurements.
- Must have basic mathematical skills to assist with measurements and computations of installed quantities.
- Must be able to interpret and implement company mandated safety policies.
- Must have an ability to operate a level and have an understanding of cut and fills and elevations for grades.
- Must be able to operate a computer and computer software related to word processing and spreadsheets.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- 2-5 years of experience inspecting roadway construction
LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:
- OSHA 10 Certifications required or must be able to obtain certifications within 6 months of hire.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License required (or able to obtain within 6 months) and maintain a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets company policy.
- FDOT Construction Quality Training Program (CQTP) Certification required or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequently required to stand up to eight hours or more at a time.
- Required to walk in rugged conditions.
- Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- Occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequently works in outside weather conditions
- Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration
- The noise level in the work environment is often loud
- Travel, evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours may be required
