Job Summary
As a Senior Life Insurance Underwriter, you’ll serve as an advocate between our internal team members, agents/brokers and insurance carriers for life insurance applications. Most of your time, approximately 70%, will be spent doing case review, positioning, summaries, and negotiation, with the balance spent on pre-sale consultation, training and personal development, and team projects. To be successful, you will:
Primary Responsibilities
- Review/summarize lifestyle, medical, non-medical, and financial data to accurately and thoroughly evaluate/classify/rate each risk to determine insurability and determine targeted carriers based on sale goals to ultimately drive the best possible outcomes on informal and formal life insurance applications.
- Successfully deliver competitive outcomes by applying your underwriting and product experience
- Identify and address underwriting challenges within life applications/questionnaires, lab results, exams, and medical records to include advanced medical testing (MRIs, cardiac testing, pathology reports, PFTs, etc.)
- Advocate and negotiate with insurance carriers on formal and informal offers, as needed.
- Consult with agents/brokers, internal staff, insurance companies, Ash Medical Director, physicians/medical facilities, paramed companies, laboratories, or inspection companies to gather additional information to favorably position risks.
- Educate yourself on the latest medical advancements and changes it may create in relation to underwriting. Also ensure you are up to date on product offerings, industry developments and changes with the insurance carriers.
- Apply knowledge and experience to provide consistent and accurate advice on pre-sale inquiries.
- Utilize web-based Agency Management System (AMS) to document UW Summary and any important information related to any work you have done on a case.
- Have a sense of urgency without losing attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task.
- When necessary, engage the expertise of senior underwriting staff in case consultations and discussions to facilitate mentor/mentee initiatives which foster skillset strengthening.
- Ability to work in a team focused environment with willingness to contribute beyond your own assigned workload to support overall success of our underwriting department.
- Produce holistic case-by-case solutions that incorporate all the dynamics of risk assessment (medical, lifestyle, non-medical, financial) in a multi-carrier brokerage environment.
- Willingness to participate in mentoring and/or allow newer underwriters or case managers to job shadow.
- Involvement in Underwriting projects, UW Carrier Advocate and training.
- Ability to escalate your cases with carrier partners, as needed.
- Continuously look for ways to expedite and improve our processes and service.
- Foster a relationship focus with internal teammates, external customers and carrier partners; you are critical to creating customer loyalty and are a mentor to our growing team.
- Continuously partners with marketing, sales, underwriting and New Business leadership to drive additional revenue, identify potential efficiencies, and evaluate the overall service Ash provides to top advisors to ensure excellence.

- Additional industry accredited education (LOMA, ALU, CLU) is a plus.
- Strong phone and computer skills - specifically Microsoft Excel and Word - with the ability to quickly learn our internal software.
- Prior experience in, or ability to learn, appropriate use of online reinsurance manuals, carrier specific manuals, crediting/table-shave programs, and published guidelines is a must.
- Basic knowledge of life insurance industry, including key carriers and product strengths, is a must.
- Prior exposure to multi-facet underwriting to include medical, lifestyle, non-medical, and financial considerations is a must.
- A minimum of 10 years prior experience in life insurance underwriting a must.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, medical or life sciences, or a related field with 10 years of life insurance underwriting; or 15 years of relevant work experience.
