About the Role
As the Controller, you will play a crucial role in overseeing our financial operations and ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will be responsible for managing the accounting team and implementing best practices to support our rapid growth.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the accounting team, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes, including financial statement preparation and analysis
- Manage cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support strategic decision-making
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize financial systems and tools, including QuickBooks, A2X, Shopify, Google Sheets, Excel, and other software platforms
- Perform data analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and risks, providing actionable insights to senior management
- Lead the forecasting and budgeting processes, working closely with department heads to develop accurate projections and monitor performance against targets
- Communicate complex financial data and insights to stakeholders and senior management in a clear and concise manner to drive informed decision-making
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior management, including cost-saving opportunities and revenue growth strategies
- Prepare and present financial reports to stakeholders, investors, and auditors as needed
- Experience managing remote or overseas workforces, ensuring effective communication, productivity, and compliance with local regulations
- Stay current with industry trends, accounting standards, and technology advancements to drive continuous improvement
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA certification preferred
- Proven experience (10+ years) in a senior accounting role, preferably in the e-commerce or retail industry
- Expertise in QuickBooks, A2X, Shopify, Avalara, Google Sheets, Excel, and other accounting software/systems
- Strong understanding of GAAP principles, financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting
- Experience with data analysis tools and techniques, with a focus on extracting insights from financial data
- Ability to communicate complex financial concepts and data to non-finance stakeholders
- Experience managing remote or overseas teams, with a focus on effective communication, collaboration, and performance management
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities
- Strategic thinker with a focus on process improvement and business growth
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines consistently
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee routinely is required to sit; walk; talk and hear; use hands to keyboard, finger, handle, and feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch. Emotional Demands
- Data analysis & interpretation. You will have to process and review a lot of information from a variety of sources, understand how data is collected, assess data quality, and how to use the information.
- Communication skills. You need to have advanced communication skills in both oral and written form. Emails and written communication with colleagues and external partners, written reports for senior executives. Able to communicate complex financial information to people outside of the finance department.
- Comfortable with technology. Able to navigate data through computers, mobile, software, databases. Stay up to date with technology advances.
- Oriented to detail. Financial forecasts rely on projections which can be impacted by even minor changes in sales patterns, consumer sentiment, economic shifts, competitor changes, etc. You will need to be attuned to small changes in all streams of data.
- Confident decision-making skills. You will need to review data and make sound decisions on what actions to take and make confident recommendations to senior management. You may need to make decisions quickly with limited amounts of information in urgent situations.
