Role

The Electrical Utility Checker will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring the safety of personnel working in proximity to energized electrical equipment within substations. The primary focus of the role is to identify potential hazards, maintain clear communication, enforce safety protocols, and ensure proper procedures are followed at all times to prevent accidents or injuries.

Responsibilities:

Pre-Work Safety Familiarization:

    • Thoroughly instruct and familiarize with all site-specific hazards before assuming checking duties.

Monitoring Personnel:

    • Maintain undivided attention on all personnel under observation, ensuring no distractions interfere with safety oversight.
    • Provide consistent warnings to personnel approaching energized parts or other hazards and repeat as necessary to ensure constant awareness.

Team Coordination and Oversight:

    • Ensure sufficient checkers are deployed where the work scope is extensive and requires additional oversight.
    • Approve personnel movement between locations and ensure designated routes are followed.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

    • Ensure that all checkers (CPCs) are easily identifiable via unique PPE, including hard hats, safety vests, or other clearly marked gear.

Worksite Coordination and Communication:

    • Conduct tailboards and work status reviews when work is being conducted near energized equipment.
    • Maintain constant communication with onsite personnel to identify hazards, verify understanding, and approve movement around hazardous zones.

Safety Verification:

    • Ensure that all personnel maintain safe work distances from energized equipment and verify the condition of grounding equipment.
    • Confirm that barriers, warning blocks, and insulating equipment are in place and in proper condition.

Workplace Safety Protocols:

    • Review and ensure proper application of grounding procedures and use of insulating barriers in line with the SCE Substation Grounding Manual.
    • Approve and verify any movement or changes to work locations, confirming hazards and conditions with personnel before proceeding.

Hazard Identification and Communication:

    • Verbally communicate identified electrical hazards and confirm that personnel understand the risks before proceeding with any tasks.
    • Ensure that all personnel are aware of hazards and that grounding equipment and barriers are properly in place before work resumes.

Monitoring Equipment and Vehicles:

    • Oversee and direct the safe use of vehicles, man lifts, cranes, and other equipment within the work area.

Workplace Safety Interventions:

    • Stop work immediately under the following conditions:
    • If personnel are working in an unsafe manner.
    • If ground placement interferes with safe practices.
    • If unsafe tools or equipment are being used.

$66 - $77 a hour
A reasonable estimate of the pay range is $66 - $77 USD at the time of this posting. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.

Position will also include $150 a day worked per diem, and over time will be paid at double time.

Requirements

  • Prior experience working in electrical utility environments, particularly within substations or with energized equipment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical hazards, safety protocols, and equipment handling.
  • Valid certifications in electrical safety, such as CPR, first aid, or any specialized training required for substation safety protocols
  • Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise instructions and safety warnings.
  • Ability to assess hazards and make quick decisions to ensure safety.
  • Proficient in the use of PPE and safety equipment.
  • Understanding of electrical grounding procedures and insulating equipment use.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outdoor and hazardous areas near energized equipment.
  • Physical ability to monitor personnel and equipment in large, often noisy and busy work zones.
  • Must be fluent in English to ensure clear communication with all personnel on site.

The Electrical Utility Checker will work in dynamic environments, including substations and other electrical facilities. The role may require standing or walking for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and handling potential physical hazards associated with electrical work.
