Full Job Description

The Facilities Manager is a key member of the Venue Operations team, supporting all venues operated by the San Diego Symphony: The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, Jacobs Music Center in downtown San Diego and a Warehouse.

The Facilities Manager is responsible for managing Facilities Technicians, project workflow, special projects, compliance, and maintenance at all venues.

The Facilities Manager works with external vendors and contractors and works closely with the Director of Operations Administration to determine budgets, resources, and material requirements for all projects.

Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic decision making.  
  • Drive operational excellence.   
  • Anticipate problems and create a menu of solutions.  
  • Establish and lead equipment depreciation and replacement process and program. 
  • Review job requests and work orders daily to determine workload priorities. Assign work to staff and monitor progress towards completion.
    • NOTE: Facilities staff will be expected to work in and become familiar with all venues and will ensure each venue has coverage for both workday shifts and event shifts.
  • Respond to messages in a timely fashion and attend necessary meetings.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance activities on systems to provide continuous performance of HVAC, electricity, gas, and other systems required for operations.
  • Perform routine facility inspections for conformance with operational and safety requirements and standards.
  • Schedule maintenance and ensure compliance with city, state, federal, and OSHA safety and environmental laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Perform or assist with general trade work as required.
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations Administration to resolve facility problems and personnel issues.
  • Interact professionally with the public, vendors, and staff; maintain effective working relationships and work in cooperation with Symphony management to effectively meet objectives.
  • Respond to all emergencies as needed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure proper documentation in CMMS system of work performed and maintain accurate long-term records.
  • Serve as first responder to after-hours emergency calls for the venue.
  • Attend work-related events as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates.

Management Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise Facilities Technician staff members.
  • Responsible for planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Appraise performance and provide positive or corrective reinforcement when needed.
  • Recognize, utilize, and develop the skill sets of individual staff members.
  • Available to work nights and weekends on a consistent basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in facility management.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team.
  • Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Experience working with state-of-the-art building systems including HVAC and electrical.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and standards.
  • Expert knowledge of operations and facility maintenance in all areas including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and computer skills.
  • Ability to quickly determine severity of problems; troubleshoot, resolve, or refer to appropriate technical staff as appropriate to determine root cause analysis and correction.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and work ethic.
  • Must be able to read blueprints and as-built drawings.
  • Must be computer literate.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, kneel, climb, and use repetitive motions.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to negotiate stairs and ladders.
  • The employee may need to navigate backstage and crowded spaces in both indoor and outdoor venues.
  • The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from multiple people and interact with the public and other staff.

Working Conditions

  • Regular, predictable attendance required, as well as numerous evening and weekend work shifts and irregular and extended working hours as needed to support an event-based schedule.
  • The noise level in the environment ranges from quiet to moderate to loud during events.
  • Normal event-working conditions include standing for extended periods of time, light to moderate lifting.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to irregular ranges of humidity and temperature.
  • Mobility in crowded spaces in both indoor and outdoor venues.

Benefits

Pay Range:

$75,000.00-$95,000.00 annually
