Full Job Description

The Senior Character Technical Director will work closely with our animation, modeling, and visual effects teams to create, implement, and maintain character rigs for use in high-end animation. This role requires a deep understanding of character creation and animation techniques, as well as excellent problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will have a passion for pushing the boundaries of technology to create the most realistic and emotive characters possible.

Responsibilities:


  • Collaborate with animation and modeling teams to develop efficient, intuitive character rigs.
  • Develop and implement advanced character deformation methods such as musculoskeletal simulation, cloth, hair, and facial deformation.
  • Implement rigging and deformation tools using a combination of off-the-shelf and proprietary software.
  • Collaborate with modelers to influence the character's design and geometry to create characters that can be rigged and animated effectively.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the animation team, understanding their needs and limitations when setting up character rigs.
  • Assist animators and technical artists with troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Develop tools and scripts to optimize the character setup and animation process.
  • Train and mentor junior team members in best practices and techniques in character setup and rigging.
  • Evaluate new software and technology and how it can be used to improve the character creation process.
  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of departmental standards and techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Animation, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in a similar role, preferably in the animation or game industry.
  • Strong understanding of character rigging techniques, including skinning, muscle systems, facial rigging, and dynamics.
  • Proficiency in Maya, Houdini, or similar 3D software.
  • Advanced knowledge of Python or other scripting languages.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and kinetics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with photorealistic characters.
  • Familiarity with C++ or other object-oriented programming languages.
  • Experience with game engine technology, such as Unreal Engine or Unity.
  • Understanding of machine learning techniques applied to character rigging and animation.
  • Leadership experience and the ability to mentor less experienced team members.
