Full Job Description
Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Lightmatter is redefining what computers and human beings are capable of by delivering a fundamentally new kind of computer that calculates using light. Transistors, the workhorse of modern computers, aren't improving at the rate they once were. To scale AI, companies are building increasingly large and energy-expensive data centers—a path that is neither financially nor environmentally sustainable. By delivering ultra-high performance and energy efficiency, Lightmatter’s compute engine will power rapid advancements in AI while lowering its environmental footprint. We are inviting a Mechanical Engineer with design and structural analysis expertise with knowledge of semiconductor packaging technologies to our team.
In this role you will be working on leading edge packaging technologies to enable AI architectures that will set new industry standards with respect to compute power, performance and efficiency. You will be a member of the packaging core competency team to carry out mechanical design and structural analysis for packaging technologies under consideration; identify key failure modes under product use conditions, run appropriate parametric design studies to influence product and package design upstream. You will be responsible for the package stack-up analysis, including definition of mechanical and thermal aspect influencing package form factors, driving socket/enabling mechanisms (as required by the product) carrying out necessary Finite element analysis and tolerance analysis, and proposing appropriate solutions to finalize the design. The results of your work will lead to advanced package designs that meet power dissipation, assembly, and reliability requirements, while delivering a system-level solution for leading-edge products in the data centers and high-end compute segment.
Responsibilities:
- Create mechanical models of package stack up and associated components
- Perform required finite element analysis to highlight key design, assembly and reliability trade-offs.
- Perform mechanical design analysis to identify solutions in order to improve the package mechanical integrity.
- Perform geometric tolerance analysis.
- Create GD&T drawings and CAD models
- Apply knowledge of manufacturing techniques to impact on design and perform FMEAs and drive cost implications of process/design choices
- Collaborate with the package and systems team to ensure packaging solutions comply with the system's boundary conditions and vice versa
- Generate modeling and simulation reports
Requirements
- Masters or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design and finite element analysis.
- Experienced and well versed with CAD tools such as Solidworks/AutoCAD
- Experience with FEA solvers such as ABAQUS or ANSYS
- Knowledge of Semiconductor Packaging Technologies. Understanding of general issues, pros and cons of various package technologies such as 3D, 2.5D, and FCBGA as relates to mechanical and thermal design
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 standards is a plus
- Ability to work independently, lead a team, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in cross functional teams
- Ability to work independently and tackle projects with minimum supervision
- Creative thinker, have the ability to solve problems quickly
Benefits
- Comprehensive Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
- 401k matching
- Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
- Generous Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
- Paid Family Leave
- Short Term & Long Term Disability
- Training & Development
- Flexible, hybrid workplace model
- Stock Option Plan
