Full Job Description
The Staff Mechanical Engineer has responsibility for mechanical and electromechanical design and systems integration of company products. This individual has a significant impact on product innovation, cost, schedule, and feature set. This individual will retain technical ownership of mechanical designs and is responsible for the system assembly throughout the design, development, production, and support phases. This role relies on experience and judgment to accomplish goals per plan, develop creative design concepts independently, and be able to apply advanced simulation tools to ensure product reliability. Efficient performance of a variety of complicated tasks is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Product development activities ranging from conceptual development, prototyping, and design validation to manufacturing and existing product support; may work individually or lead or direct the work of others on a project basis
- Leads collaboration with engineers of various disciplines to develop products with electromechanical and mechanical content
- Integration of electronics, mechanical and user interfaces, including PCBAs, switches, sensors, buttons, screens, power supplies, wiring, cable management, and peripherals
- Leads development of hand-held user interfaces with levels of tactile and cosmetic quality meeting industry leading consumer products with premium look and feel
- Develops systems and components made from a variety of fabrication techniques resulting in assemblies ranging in size from small to large for low, mid and high production volumes
- Develops highly reliable systems as measured by industry standard statistical techniques
- Leads cross-functional teams on a project basis to develop systems optimized for manufacturability/cost/performance/reliability and component availability
- Leads project team to perform root-cause analysis of issues detected during development, engineering testing, qualification, or when deployed products are returned from the field
- Leads design and development of assembly fixtures as well as test fixtures as needed
- Advanced component and complex assembly design while mentoring colleagues as well
- Authors mechanical drawings, technical documents, and assembly instructions as needed
- Shares industry knowledge and innovative ideas with the team and company as a whole
- Authors test procedures, conducts lab tests, generates test reports, and presents results
- May include involvement in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of products as required to accomplish company goals
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience in a related field
- 9+ years of experience working in a similar role
- 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role
- Experience designing LRUs to meet FAA certification requirements such as DO-160
- Expert user of a 3D CAD (preferably SolidWorks) and PDM
- Capable of generating specification drawings with dimensions and tolerances per ASME 14.5Y
- Expertise in implementing tolerance studies and analyses to document and validate part variation and assembly fits and clearances
- Expertise in designing injection molded, sheet metal, die cast, machined, stamped and die cut parts
- Expertise with statistical techniques for part fabrication and manufacturing process output control
- Expertise with electromagnetic regulatory requirements and mitigation of problems found during testing
- Expertise with the implementation of various thermal management techniques
- Strong track record of owning and driving significant portions of complex engineering projects
- Strong track record in meeting project goals and objectives
- Familiarity with a large variety of the industry’s concepts, practices, and procedures
Benefits
The starting pay range for this position is $112,000 to 144,000 per year however, base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge and location.
