As Scout’s Construction Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in providing engineering and technical support for utility-scale renewable energy construction projects.  You will have the opportunity to share your knowledge to mentor colleagues and shape the processes and best practices for managing BESS and the technical aspects of construction at a growing IPP with an entrepreneurial culture.  You will be involved in multiple technologies including wind, solar, and battery storage. 

Your attention to detail and ability to concurrently drive multiple work streams forward on time and on budget will be key to your success. Your technical knowledge and experience with interfacing with internal and external construction teams on renewable energy projects will be widely valued in this role. 

Travel to various project sites within the United States is expected one to two times per month during project construction.  Remote candidates will be expected to be in the Boulder office one week per month. 

You will thrive in an entrepreneurial team-based environment in which: 

  • You work closely with counterparts in the Engineering, Preconstruction, Procurement, Development, Construction, and Interconnection teams to identify and address challenges that arise during project design and construction and then implement solutions. 
  • You drive process development from the ground up as the project progresses and document learnings to inform future project construction and design. 
  • You have the opportunity to work on a variety of renewable construction projects and technologies, including wind, solar, and battery storage. 

 

During the pre-construction project phase, you will: 

  • Interface with Engineering, Development, Procurement, and Finance to optimize project design, including site selection, constructability reviews, interconnection options, review of construction documents, and permitting process support. 
  • Provide input to the technical aspects of EPC contract negotiations. 
  • Coordinate with the Preconstruction/Engineering team to ensure that lessons learned from construction are incorporated into future designs. 

 

For renewable construction projects, you will: 

  • Support project managers of active wind and solar construction projects to address and advise on technical challenges and compliance to ensure that Scout projects are built to high quality standards. 
  • Oversee any root cause analysis processes with the contractor and third-party engineers. 
  • Assist the project manager with responding to Project RFIs and questions with independent engineers throughout construction and close out any open items to support the project’s achievement of on-time financial closure. 
  • Oversee construction compliance with the Interconnection Agreement requirements. 
  • Assist the Construction Project Manager with project management items including monthly reporting, and cost and schedule oversite, as they pertain to technical and engineering items. 
  • Interface with the on-site third-party team of quality control professionals as needed to resolve technical challenges. 

 

Communicate with and represent Scout effectively and professionally with a variety of project partners and stakeholders, including: 

  • Attend weekly meetings with the contractor to address any open technical challenges. 
  • Attend internal update meetings with the Development and Finance teams to provide internal updates on any project technical challenges. 
  • Coordinate with internal and external engineers to resolve technical project challenges. 
  • Attend monthly meetings at the project site during key phases of construction.  Audit the site to confirm compliance with the engineering design. 

 

Leverage your technical expertise to ensure efficient and effective project delivery, including: 

  • Oversee the review and approval process of engineering designs. 
  • Assist in the resolution of design issues and contract enforcement. 
  • Interface with the interconnecting and local utilities to ensure compliance with the GIA requirements. 
  • Coordinate and provide support with bringing the SCADA system online alongside the Scout operations team. 
  • Provide guidance and support during all commissioning, start-up testing, and third-party inspections. 
  • Review engineering studies as they are provided by the contractor and engineer of record. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.  Electrical engineering degree is preferred. 
  • Past work experience must include at least one of the following: 
  • At least 3+ years as a design engineer for renewable projects. 
  • At least 3+ years in an Owner’s Engineer consulting role with experience on renewable energy projects.  
  • Experience on design and implementation during the construction phase across renewable technologies including wind, solar, and battery storage. 
  • Preference for candidates with formal Project Management training and proven track record of success in managing the technical aspects of multiple projects through the full engineer/procure/construct (EPC) process into operations. 
  • Experience managing SCADA implementation a plus. 
  • Experience mentoring and training junior team members a plus. 

 

Technical skills: 

  • Ability to interface on a technical level with engineers from multiple disciplines and successfully resolve engineering disagreements. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of plans and specifications for civil and electrical work.   
  • Ability to solve problems and make informed decisions quickly. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, project management, problem-solving and team-building skills. 

 

Proficient with computers and has strong working knowledge of the following: 

  • MS Office, MS Project, and document management systems (e.g., SharePoint, Procore). 
  • Comfortable working with design and review software including BlueBeam and AutoCAD. 
  • Adept at the use of Google Earth. Understanding of ArcGIS and GlobalMapper a plus. 

 

Work Environment and Work Style: 

  • Demonstrated high level of ownership and responsibility for ensuring that projects are designed to high-quality Scout standards. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a flat organization, successfully leveraging the expertise of multiple colleagues in different lines of reporting. 
  • Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities with clear target setting and follow-through capability in a fast-paced and rapidly changing work environment. 

 

Additional Qualifications: 

  • Must have a valid current driver license, and able to travel and perform field work. 
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements. OSHA 10 certification preferred. 
  • Authorized to work in the United States. 

Working Conditions 

  • Ability to work outside of a Monday through Friday schedule, including holidays and weekends, at times when needed by the project. 
  • This position requires up to 40% travel to project sites in the U.S. In addition, remote candidates will need to travel to Boulder at least one week per month. 
  • Office based employees work together and collaborate in the Boulder office three days per week and have the flexibility to work from home two days per week.

Target base salary: $130,000-150,000
