Full Job Description
Purpose of the Position
The Laser Design Engineer II will be working across many of our key product lines in this mission critical position. Key responsibilities include: prototyping and development, performance validation and testing, and release to production of advanced photonics systems. This role partners heavily with all engineering disciplines and drives requirements and implementation of the product development to meet the needs of the target application. Position involves occasional travel (generally less than 15%).
Salary ranges from 80 - 110K
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Testing and validation of laser, optical, and application performance for in-development electronics products, optical components (including nonlinear optics), and laser/optical systems.
- Generating application-centric performance specifications to serve as technical requirements for partner engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Firmware).
- Identify technological pathways for future product engineering via theoretical and laboratory research and development.
- Prepare regular reports on project(s) status and progress, including Gantt charts, system diagrams, and processed data and figures.
- Assist with the release to production process, including
- Bills of Materials and Item Creation within Thorlabs’ ERP system via Engineering Change Orders
- Build documentation, assembly instructions, and Training of production staff
- Production and service support of laser and laser accessory products and optical components, including quality control/inspection of critical components.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting Company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Physical Activities:
The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.
The salary for this position is $101K – 110K
Requirements
Qualifications
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years’ industry experience, and/or advanced degree
- Hands-on experience building optical and laser assemblies, preference for experience with advanced photonics techniques, e.g. AOM/EOM’s, spectroscopic wavelength locking, cavity locking, femtosecond pulse autocorrelation, etc.
- Experience with advanced scientific instruments desired, e.g. Lock-In amplifiers, PID servos, PLL’s, etc.
Education:
- BS in an optics or physics-related engineering field
- Masters degree or higher in optics or physics-related field (preferred)
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Atomic and Molecular Optics OR Ultrafast and Nonlinear Optics knowledge and experience
- Alignment of complex optical systems
- Data processing, analysis, and presentation (Excel, Matlab, or similar)
- Scientific software experience is a plus (MATLAB, Python, Zemax, COMSOL, etc)
