ORGANIZATION
Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School is a Tier 1 school in Washington, DC, serving 1,040 students in grades PreK-Fifth across two campuses. It is one of the most diverse schools in the District. Mundo Verde aims to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities. OPPORTUNITY
The Executive Director is an experienced and dynamic leader with a passion for achieving the Mundo Verde mission to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities. The Executive Director has direct responsibility for managing and coaching principals and other instructional leaders and provides oversight of senior leaders in the areas of operations, finance, sustainability, and advancement. The Executive Director will also play a crucial role in collaboration with the Founding Executive Director to ensure a smooth and successful executive transition aligned with the school's long-term goals.
Reporting to the board of trustees, the Executive Director upholds Mundo Verde’s charter by leading the school’s senior team, fostering a strong school climate and culture, delivering strong student achievement results while eliminating the disparities between the highest and lowest performing students, engaging stakeholders around an inspiring and shared vision for success, and deepening Mundo Verde’s equity and anti-racism initiatives. The Executive Director will cultivate a culture of high expectations across all staff to ensure that every Mundo Verde student has equitable access to high achievement through instruction that cultivates biliteracy and a deep understanding of sustainability.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Visionary, Strategic, and Inclusive Leadership
- Inspires stakeholders with a compelling vision for success, prioritizing relationship building and fostering productive connections with key constituents to achieve impactful goals.
- In collaboration with the board, establishes, monitors, and communicates progress on key metrics for success aligned to Mundo Verde’s charter and strategic priorities of equity, talent engine, community as crew, and operational excellence.
- Works closely with the board president to support the board in fulfilling its governance functions and facilitates the optimum performance by the board, its committees, and individual board members.
- Collaborates closely with the founder to ensure a smooth and successful transition, continuing a positive and growth-oriented phase for the entire school, aligned with Mundo Verde’s mission, vision, and long-term goals.
Advancement of Equitable Academic Outcomes
- Takes responsibility for achieving high academic outcomes, promoting a robust academic culture aligned with Mundo Verde's profile of a graduate.
- Leads the drive to continually improve the Mundo Verde academic model – planning, implementing, and evaluating short- and long-term academic goals.
- Proactively addresses challenges through data analysis, data-driven decision-making, and collaboration with school leaders.
- Advocates for educational equity, strategically allocating resources to foster an inclusive school culture and integrating equity into all aspects of the school, including tiered support systems.
- Establishes a cohesive school culture that values seeking and listening to diverse perspectives both within and outside the organization, demonstrating cultural competence and engaging in continual self-assessment on issues of difference.
Effective Organizational Management
- Provides general oversight of school activities, manages and assures a smooth functioning of day-to-day operations, in accordance with established policies and charter goals and strategic priorities.
- Implements, maintains and communicates local, state and national policies effectively while providing ethical and legal recommendations to ensure decisions align with established standards.
- Demonstrates an understanding of, and oversees the successful completion of all compliance processes for Mundo Verde as both a school and a local education authority as well for each of its campuses – including but not limited to – accreditation, Public Charter School Board (PCSB) reporting and charter renewal processes, state reporting (OSSE), and federal reporting.
- Ensures the strategic allocation of resources and strong fiscal oversight, communicates budget priorities, and tracks progress toward success metrics across the school.
- Ensures the effectiveness and quality of schoolwide programs, systems and facilities through the implementation of standards, controls, procedures, and regular evaluations.
School Leader Development, Management and Empowerment
- Develops and manages the performance of the principals and other school leaders, ensuring that metrics for Mundo Verde charter goals and continual success aligned to strategic priorities are met.
- Empowers and coaches principals in leading their campuses, acting as a reliable advisor and helping them anticipate and respond to challenges within the internal and external environments.
- Serves as a guiding force for instructional school leaders, offering expertise in various aspects of campus management, including planning, staffing, program development, and continuous improvement.
- Attracts, retains, and coaches a diverse senior leadership team, builds a culture of collaboration and teamwork across leaders, and supports leaders in creating campus and team cultures aligned with the values of Mundo Verde and core practices of EL Education.
- Ensures the development of a robust and impactful training, development, and coaching plan aligned to mission, vision, and organization priorities for school leaders, educators, and other instructional staff.
School Culture and Stakeholder Engagement
- Fosters an inclusive school culture where every Mundo Verde community member feels seen, understood, and valued.
- Ensures that the school culture uplifts and affirms the Mundo Verde Habits of Community Stewardship: Empathy, Speak your truth, Perseverance, Inquiry, Collaboration, Appreciation (known by the acronym “ESPICA”).
- Actively seeks input from key stakeholders and engages stakeholders in support of collective progress to achieve school goals aligned to Mundo Verde’s charter and profile of a graduate.
- Remains attuned to stakeholder dynamics and meaningfully contributes to a strong board of trustees.
- Serves as the chief liaison to key agencies or partners – building relationships with and advocating for school needs as appropriate – including the Public Charter School Board, OSSE, DC Deputy Mayor for Education, and EL Education (our national partner).
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- An accomplished leader with 5+ years of executive school leadership experience and success in a school context in a community similar to Washington, D.C.
- Demonstrated commitment to Mundo Verde’s mission of fostering high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities
- A deep understanding of sustainability, biliteracy, and EL Education
- A builder of authentic relationships with community partners, policymakers, funders, and other supporters, able to engage with various individuals and speak clearly and compellingly about the organization’s goals and priorities
- A proven track record of building and nurturing a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in previous roles
- A track record of leading with integrity, transparency, and accountability
- Knowledge of the academic and social-emotional needs of students
- Political savvy, with the ability to navigate complex politics and partnerships
- Experience attracting, retaining, managing, and coaching a senior leadership team
- Strategic thinker who can identify potential issues and develop workable solutions and systems to manage an organization
- Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency
Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary range of $160,000 - $200,000 and robust benefits. More details can be provided upon request.
