The Field Engineer position is crucial within the project operations team of a construction project, particularly in the heavy civil sector focusing on highway, road, and bridge construction. This role involves a blend of technical, managerial, and communication tasks aimed at supporting the project staff, including Superintendents and Foremen, to ensure that the construction work is planned, efficient, and well-documented. Essential Functions:
- Material and Subcontractor Procurement:
- Assist engineering staff in identifying and procuring material suppliers and subcontractors.
- Schedule subcontractors and materials efficiently.
- Safety and Planning Participation:
- Actively participate in daily and weekly safety meetings.
- Contribute to work plan development alongside the project engineer, superintendents, and foremen.
- Quantity and Cost Management:
- Manage and perform quantity takeoffs as required.
- Manage the cost and quantity reporting, ensuring accuracy and providing reports to superintendents and foremen.
- Change Order and Document Control:
- Assist in pricing change orders when necessary.
- Participate in the project's document control process, maintaining an accurate record set of project drawings and specifications.
- Project Closeout:
- Engage in the project closeout process, including final cost reports, as-built drawings, and turnover of required documents to the owner.
Requirements
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience:
- 1-3 years of recent experience in heavy highway, road, and bridge construction is required. A prior internship with a heavy civil contractor is preferred.
- Experience with medium to large projects ($10M+) is necessary.
- Education:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a similar discipline is preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- The ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications is essential.
- Proficiency in quantity takeoffs and an understanding of construction documentation and procedures are crucial.
- Teamwork and Independence:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong collaboration skills with project staff, owners, vendors, and subcontractors.
