Organizational Overview:
Since being founded locally in 1985, Make-A-Wish Illinois has granted more than 17,000 wishes and continues its mission to share the power of a wish with children in all 102 counties across the state.
A wish can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. This belief guides us in everything we do at Make-A-Wish. It inspires us to grant life-changing wishes for children going through so much. Life-changing wish journeys are made possible by dedicated staff and volunteers who fulfill the work of our mission, helping children discover, create, fulfill and experience the lasting impact of their most heartfelt wish.
The Accounting internship provides first-hand experience with day-to-day accounting operations at one of the top U.S. charities. You will gain valuable insights into strategies for success from our Leadership team in group advisory sessions covering the organization’s Mission Delivery, Fund Development, Marketing & Communications, and Operations. Additionally, you'll get to see how a nonprofit operates differently from a for-profit corporation.
The Accounting intern will report to the Accounting Director and work alongside the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant to assist with general accounting functions including accounts payable, monthly ledger close, and other financial analyses.
- Time Commitment: Internship will take place from June through August. Part-time, hybrid work with one day in the office per week and remainder of work completed remotely.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Entering/coding vendor bills and volunteer expense reports
- Reconciling general ledger accounts and other financial analyses
- Other projects as assigned
Requirements
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
- Desire to contribute to the mission of Make-A-Wish
Preferred Qualifications:
- Accounting experience (educational or experiential)
- Previous exposure to accounting operations
Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to commute to our downtown Chicago office
- Minimum age for all internships is 18
- Selected candidates will be asked to participate in a criminal background check.
