Full Job Description

The Freeport Park District, established in 1911, manages Freeport's parks and open spaces, which are a source of great pride for our community. With a management portfolio that includes 12 park sites and over 700 acres of property, we strive to enhance the recreational and natural experiences of our residents. Our flagship site, Krape Park, spans over 130 acres and features a plethora of amenities ranging from an 18-hole miniature golf course, picnic shelters, and a carousel, to fishing piers and outdoor amphitheaters. Additionally, we offer diverse recreational programs encompassing fitness, sports, cultural arts, aquatics, and activities tailored for individuals with disabilities. The Freeport Park District employs 20 full-time staff along with over 150 part-time and seasonal employees, maintaining a budget of approximately $6.8 million. We are currently seeking a passionate and dedicated Superintendent of Parks and Natural Resources to oversee the management and conservation of our natural resources, enhance our park facilities, and lead our park maintenance staff. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play an instrumental role in preserving our parks, fostering community engagement, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our cherished natural spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management and maintenance of all park facilities and natural resources within the district.
  • Develop and implement park and resource management plans that enhance the parks and natural areas.
  • Manage budgets, grants, and funding specifically for park development and conservation projects.
  • Collaborate with local agencies and community organizations to promote environmental stewardship.
  • Lead and manage a team of maintenance staff, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices for land use and management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Natural Resource Management, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Horticulture, Urban Forestry or another related field. Certified Arborist within six months of hire and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) within one year. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.
  • Minimum of Five years’ experience in the field with three years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of park operations, maintenance practices, and environmental stewardship.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management and financial oversight.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with community members and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
