We are a fast-growing Minnesota Home Healthcare provider and we are searching for a Direct Support Professional to join our team.

Seeking a professional to provide unique individualized home supports (IHS) as well as staff supervision and training for a 27 year old gay man with a brain injury (FASD) living in Uptown, Minneapolis.  

Your hours include 6:45a – 2:45p Sun and Mon, 10:45s-2:45p Tues, e/o Wed 6:45a-2:45p and occasional Sat’s 5:30p-10:15p. The client has a full-time job which occurs from 5:30 am - 5:30 pm Thursday-Sunday (and every other Wednesday) in Bloomington.

The client is knowledgeable and proficient in many aspects of life but needs skill building assistance in several specific areas. His brain injury limits executive functioning including decision making skills, memory deficits, organizing and planning, foreseeing consequences, and managing impulsivity. The client benefits from assistance in making good decisions and developing skills for greater independence. In addition to a brain injury, the client has a history of significant trauma. He has learned coping skills through extensive mental health support but benefits from positive reinforcement. He has difficulty reading and writing and needs to continue trying to improve. Driving assistance is also required because the client has an injury to their eye which affects depth perception and makes driving too difficult.

Examples of supervisory tasks include hands on initial training and ongoing support of 24/7 direct care staff. You will assign and monitor tasks to clients support team, provide medication and appointment oversight and actively participate in team meetings.  

In the past, the client has worked well with paraprofessionals and resource managers in schools who taught how to resolve conflict, manage competing priorities, manage emotions, planning and organizing, as well as improving skills deficits.

Qualifications:

-Must be able to think independently, problem solve, take the lead, and motivate the client and staff. The client needs instruction regarding independent living skills to successfully manage their home, health, social life, and work readiness.

- You will provide education and opportunities to problem solve with our client with regards to apartment maintenance and organization, finances and budgeting, social skills, and self-advocacy. You must be adept at discovering what needs to be accomplished and noticing what could be potential “red flags”.  

-Potential applicants need to be able to teach organizational skills, planning and scheduling future events, daily budgeting, and implementing a healthy diet. This individual must be able to assist the client with remembering to do daily living chores (i.e. hygiene, laundry, cleaning, and taking medications).

-As previously mentioned, the applicant must be willing to drive the client to work, social events, medical appointments. A valid driver's license, registration, insurance, and your own vehicle are required.

-The client has a cat and lives on the 4th floor of a building without an elevator. The applicant must not be allergic to cats.

-Finally, the applicant will be asked to assist in finding activities around town (planning) and potentially accompanying the client to activities. The client has interests in cooking, history, military history, musicals, among other things. The applicant could be asked to participate in some of these.

-must pass a background check that may include fingerprinting.

Week 1: (28 hrs) plus occasional Sat’s

Sun, Mon: 6:45a-2:45p

Tues: 10:45a-2:45p

Wed: 6:45a-2:45p

Occasional Sat’s: 5:30p-10:15p

Week 2: (20 hrs) plus occasional Sat’s

Sun, Mon: 6:45a-2:45p

Tues: 10:45a-2:45p

Occasional Sat’s: 5:30p-10:15p

Ability to Relocate:

  • Minneapolis, MN: Relocate before starting work (Required)

Ideal Requirements for Candidates

-a degree in social work, counseling, human services, or education (or currently in school for one of the above) is desirable. The applicant must be assertive, confident, and an independent thinker.

-previous successful supervisory or leadership experience helpful.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. College experience is beneficial. Knowledge, understanding, and/or experience with disability, autism, FASD is welcomed.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Required:
Valid driver’s license in good standing. A DMV background check will be conducted. Car registration and vehicle insurance as candidate will be providing transportation for individual receiving services.
