ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The School of American Ballet (SAB) at Lincoln Center, founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, is the preeminent ballet school in the country. Our mission is to train professional dancers for careers in classical ballet. 

During the Winter Term (September-June), 55 Advanced students reside on-site at the School in the Meredith Willson Residence Hall, a facility shared with the Juilliard School. During SAB’s 5-week Summer Course (June and July), 200 middle school and high school students reside on campus. 

STUDENT LIFE DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

SAB’s Department of Student Life is dedicated to fostering and promoting a well-rounded approach to the emotional, social, physical, cultural, intellectual, and academic spheres of SAB students’ lives. The Department’s work is deeply engrained into the SAB student experience and aims to enhance students’ artistic training by supporting them fully outside of the studios. This support is provided through a highly intentional approach to the areas of residence life, health and wellness, academics, and personal development. The Department of Student Life is also responsible for enforcing the School’s Code of Conduct. SAB’s values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are central in the Department’s work. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

The Department of Student Life is seeking a part-time Desk Attendant for Residence Life. The Desk Attendant will work 21 hours per week during both the Winter Term (September – June) and Summer Course (June – July) and will manage the daily operations of the central residence hall desk during business hours. 

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Consistently enforce School policy and procedure and work collaboratively with Student Life Senior Staff to address student and community concerns as they arise. 
  • Develop professional rapport with students and staff that supports a positive community atmosphere where all students feel safe and respected. 
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students that reflect age-appropriate interactions and reinforce the Desk Attendant staff member’s ability to enact the responsibilities of their role. 

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Life for Residential and Transitional Programming, this position includes the following duties and responsibilities: 

Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Be present and on time for all scheduled shifts.  
  • Serve as the front-line representative for all residence hall operations by interfacing with students, staff and visitors, and answering the phone.  
  • Oversee the full scope of administrative functions at the residence hall desk. 
  • Work collaboratively with Senior Staff to respond to student and community needs, when they arise.  
  • Answer all incoming calls; transfer them accordingly and take messages or contact the appropriate staff person as needed.  
  • Maintain consistent and timely communication via email and Student Life Communication Log, and Residence Hall email, daily. 
  • Maintain student and departmental forms and files.  
  • Assist in scheduling medical appointments for students, as needed. 
  • Possess the ability to work in various databases and handle confidential student information with care and discretion.  
  • Support enrollment processes by collecting, tracking and following up on residential student form submissions. 
  • Administrative duties as assigned, including typing, collating, copying, coordinating and organizing files and supplies. 

 

Policy Enforcement and Attendance Reporting  

  • Oversee student sign-out process, communicating with parents, using appropriate judgement to ensure student safety, as necessary. 
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all residence hall policies and procedures to ensure their consistent and thoughtful enforcement.  
  • Maintain confidentiality of departmental records and student information. 
  • Monitor/observe all visible activities of students and guests within the residence hall. 
  • Appropriately record and report all absences for academic and ballet classes. 
  • Dispense daily prescription medications to students, as needed, ensuring students take their medication as prescribed.  

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree required 
  • Previous experience working with minors 
  • 1 year of professional experience working in a public-service setting (healthcare, education, social, work, etc.)   
  • Administrative experience preferred (answering phones, taking messages, desk operations)  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Teams 
  • Strong organization and time-management skills 
  • Effective written and oral communication skills  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous experience working in a residential setting as a Resident Assistant, Office Assistant, Desk Assistant, or related position. 

Benefits

  • This is a part-time role with an hourly pay rate of $16, scheduled for 20 hours per week. 
  • This role does not offer medical and retirement benefits. 

 

SCHEDULE

Anticipated Start Date: September 2, 2024

  • Two 8-hour shifts per week (8 am – 4 pm, Monday-Friday) 
  • One half day per week (8 am – 12 pm OR 12 pm – 4 pm, Monday-Friday) 
  • For example, a Desk Attendant might work 8 am – 4 pm on Monday and Tuesday, and work from 8 am – 1 pm on Wednesday, based on staffing availability. 
  • 1-hour, weekly Desk Attendant Staff meeting (may be virtual, depending on staff availability and schedules)
