Reports to: Board of Directors

Position: Full-Time, Exempt

Location: This is a remote role. The Executive Director must be based in the United States and eligible to work in the U.S.  TFI US is not able to provide work visa sponsorship at this time.

Travel: Occasional travel is required for board and donor meetings.

Salary: $140,000 - $155,000 with comprehensive benefits and generous PTO

About Teach For India, U.S.

Teach For India U.S. (TFI US) plays a crucial role in extending Teach For India's mission to address educational inequity in India. Since 2017, TFI US has mobilized intellectual, human, and financial resources to support impactful initiatives of Teach For India. The Executive Director (ED) will lead essential fundraising efforts, developing strategies to secure major donations, grants, and partnerships critical to advancing TFI US's mission.

TFI US aims to raise $1.9 million by December 2024, with a long-term goal of contributing over 30% to Teach For India's annual budget. The ED will focus on cultivating strategic relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors, engaging the Indian diaspora and other supporters through various events.

A pivotal focus for TFI US in the future will be the recruitment and training of exceptional individuals to serve as full-time teachers in low-income schools across India through the Teach For India Fellowship. This program annually places over 1,000 Fellows in under-resourced schools, impacting approximately 33,000 students in eight cities. Additionally, the ED will support an active alumni network of former Fellows in the U.S., fostering their professional development and collaboration to sustain long-term impact and drive systemic change in India's education landscape.

The Role

Teach For India U.S. (TFI US) is looking for an inspiring, entrepreneurial, and forward-thinking Executive Director with a growth mindset to spearhead its initiatives in the United States. The Executive Director will play a pivotal role in crafting and executing thorough fundraising strategies, fostering key partnerships, offering strategic leadership, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining compliance. This position requires close collaboration with an exceptionally engaged Board of Directors and TFI India to align with and achieve the organization’s mission and objectives. Additionally, the ED will be supported by an India-based TFI US team to support fundraising and operational activities in the U.S.

Strategic Leadership and Management (30%):

  • Spearhead the strategic planning process in collaboration with the Board and TFI India, establishing clear goals and success metrics.
  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive vision and growth plan for TFI US, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and long-term objectives.
  • Strategically plan and oversee the growth of the U.S. team to support organizational goals, driving and managing change to adapt to evolving educational needs and opportunities.

Fundraising and Relationship Management (60%) :

  • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure diverse and sustainable funding through cultivating and managing relationships with existing and potential donors, foundations, corporations, and government sources.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities from foundations and corporate partners, leading grant writing, reporting, and compliance to ensure alignment with donor requirements and organizational objectives.
  • Effectively communicate TFI’s mission, vision, and impact to diverse stakeholders to enhance visibility and support for the organization.
  • Engage with the Indian diaspora and other communities to broaden support for TFI, organizing and participating in events such as roadshows, salons, and collaborative gatherings.
  • Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors, leveraging their networks for fundraising efforts, and maintain a strong working relationship with Teach For India (TFI) India, ensuring alignment and effective communication.

Financial and Operational Oversight (10%) :

  • Supervise TFI US operations, including CRM management, SOP development, and process enhancement.
  • Manage vendor relationships for tax, audit, software, and insurance, ensuring compliance with legal obligations.
  • Collaborate with the Board to plan and oversee the annual budget, ensuring financial health and sustainability.

Knowledge, Skills, and Expertise

  • Advanced degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field, with over 10 years of nonprofit leadership, fundraising, or related experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in growing start-up nonprofit organizations and establishing infrastructure from the ground up.
  • Proven track record in strategic fundraising, managing donor portfolios from $2.5K to $100K, and securing six-figure multi-year commitments, particularly with high-net-worth individuals (HNIs).
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating relationships with major donors, foundations, and corporate partners for sustainable financial support and organizational growth.
  • Expertise in diversifying funding sources through partnerships, digital outreach, and private/foundation giving, achieving a 75% donor retention rate.
  • Strong ability to leverage board relationships, engage family foundations, and use targeted engagements and creative marketing, especially within the Indian diaspora in the U.S.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, adept at conveying organizational narratives and inspiring diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with strong decision-making and team management abilities, with financial acumen in budgeting, financial planning, and operational oversight.
  • Innovative leader with a deep understanding of Indian culture, capable of fostering cross-cultural relationships and navigating India's educational landscape to drive organizational growth and impact.
