Rye Country Day School is seeking a reading/study skills and grammar teacher for Summer Session beginning July 1, 2024. The Rye Country Day Summer Session offers middle and upper school students the opportunity to develop areas of special interest, explore new ideas, earn advanced credit, or review subjects that need strengthening. Summer Session is open to qualified students from any school.
Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, Prek-12, college preparatory school located in Westchester County, New York dedicated to providing students with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches. Applicants must:
- Be available for the six weeks of Summer Session, July 1 through August 9. Classes will be held in person at RCDS from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm each Monday through Friday over those six weeks, with the exception of Tuesday, July 4.
- Be able to clearly deliver a course of study in reading comprehension skills/techniques, study skills, and grammar.
- Teach multi-level classes. Class sections will be comprised of:
- One four-week session of Reading/Study Skills for 5th-6th graders
- One four-week session of Reading/Study Skills for 7th-8th graders
- One two-week session of Grammar Skills for 7th-10th graders
- Be able to differentiate instruction, developing or seeking out appropriate materials as needed, based on the needs and skills of the students who have registered for the class. Flexibility is essential.
- Be organized, clear in expectations for students, and set learning conditions that will allow students to succeed with the material.
- Give frequent feedback to students on their performance in the class.
- Prepare and submit narrative reports for students at the conclusion of the class session.
- Be comfortable making contact with a parent/guardian about a student’s progress and any concerns that may arise.
- Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance for the course.
Desired qualifications, beyond those listed above:
- Experience teaching reading, study skills, and grammar in an academically rigorous middle school environment.
- Experience teaching in a summer academic setting is a plus.
- Talent for making skill-building work fun and engaging; it is the summer!
