As a Tax Manager – Trust, Estate, and Gift, you will report on matters as it related to clients trusts, gift tax returns, and any estate or inheritance tax returns. Duties include interacting with clients to ensure a smooth compliance process, from engagement letter coordination to ultimate delivery of the tax return.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing a variety of tax returns for multiple clients including: estate, trust, gift and private foundation tax returns
- Reviewing tax returns for high net worth individuals
- Provide estate planning solutions to clients
- Having the ability to work for multiple clients simultaneously
- Developing a relationship with and maintaining contact with individual clients
- Communicating directly with clients and serving as the primary point of contact
- Being the in-charge accountant on specific clients
- Identify issues with existing plans and offer alternative ideas
- Develop relationships with clients and work with relationship partners
- Work with attorneys to ensure client’s wishes are followed as estate plans are created
- Review prepared Form 706, Estate Tax Returns
- Review prepared Form 709, Gift Tax Returns
- Review prepared Form 1041, Fiduciary Income Tax Returns
- Train staff on fiduciary income tax concepts/compliance requirements
- Provide training to staff on estate, trust and gift planning concepts/compliance requirements
- Handle compliance and planning related to clients’ particular situations
- Being cognizant of time budgets, but not allowing time budgets to sacrifice the quality and/or efficiency
- Proactively communicates with other staff on status of projects and assistance needed
- Able to tackle more complex accounting and/ or tax issues
Research
- Identifies when research is needed; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysis
- Identifies complex issues to be researched by engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research process
- Trains staff on research skills and helps to appropriately frame tax issues for analysis
- Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments
- Trains Associates and Seniors how to use all current software tools
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field required
- Master’s in Business Administration, Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation beneficial
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience with estate planning
- Prior supervisory experience required
- CPA license
- Juris Doctor is a plus
- AEP (Accredited Estate Planner) or CEP (Certified Estate Planner) is preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat
- Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA Proficient in all tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, FirmFlow, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers
