Plant Collections Manager

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, one of the nation’s oldest and most frequented historical public gardens, prides itself on the ability to create immersive visual experiences through their gardens and landscaping. The Plant Collections Manager is responsible for managing the documentation of plant records (IRISbg) through data entry, accessioning, deaccessioning and mapping. This position directly supports the Living Plant Collection policies and manages all aspects of the plant collection.

Essential Functions

• Manages the plant records system through the use of IRIS-BG.
• Maintains accurate documentation of plant material through data entry and GIS mapping.
• Conducts taxonomic verification in the existing database to ensure current validity of specimens.
• Assigns identification tags to new accessons and maintains existing accession tags on display material.
• Oversees the production and distribution of display plant labels; maintains a system of existing labels in the garden.
• Collaborates with web engineers to maintain public accessibility to the collections database in different formats and situations.
• Writes plant collection blogs and content and serves as external speaker/presenter.
• Oversees Plant Collections volunteers
• Performs all other duties as requested or assigned as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree in Horticulture or similar field with 3-5 years experience managing a garden’s plant collection.
• Thorough knowledge of plant nomenclature and is also up-to-date on current plant nomenclature standards.
• Understanding of IRIS-BG and other plant collections software and hardware applications and general office software.
• Valid Driver’s License and experience to drive equipment relating to plant collections management.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend a large majority of time walking, standing, bending, crouching and using their hands to push and pull. The employee is required to utilize a ladder and lift and/or move up to 20 to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. They will also be required to sit at a desk for long periods of time where needed.
• While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be exposed to hot or cold temperatures, outside weather conditions across all seasons.
