Full Job Description
The Houston Landing is looking for individuals to add to our team of passionate people on a mission to advance democracy in our communities and strengthen the lives of all Houstonians one story at a time. Houston Landing is an independent, nonpartisan news organization devoted to public service journalism. Initially supported by three of Houston’s leading philanthropies including Arnold Ventures, The Houston Endowment, and the Kinder Foundation, we are building a team to support our efforts in sustainability and revenue growth.
Houston Landing is hiring a general assignment reporter to cover a broad range of stories from breaking news to enterprise and investigations, on camera and off.
This role is a differentiator: we seek an accomplished journalist with a proven track record of tackling difficult assignments, writing with clarity and elegance, developing topic expertise quickly and the vision to connect the dots that are not obvious. General assignment coverage can range from anchoring major spot news to reporting with context and authority beyond the normal news cycle.
The post allows for ample enterprise and investigative reporting into underserved communities, global events that impact our neighborhoods, and just writing about what makes Houston a diamond for journalism. This is a marquee role. Bring your shoe leather and keep your passport handy.
Requirements
What we seek:
- Minimum of 10 years professional journalism experience who can report and write about issues that impact Houston.
- Comfortable reporting on location to bring color and voice to stories and create visual, social and audio storytelling, all preferred platforms for the audiences we seek to serve.
- Write daily, as well as spin out weekly and monthly visually compelling stories.
- Work with our audience, marketing and development teams to promote our work.
- History of collaboration and teamwork that elevates journalism via co-authoring stories and mentorship.
- A reporter who understands the global view of Houston and how what happens across the world resonates here.
- While language proficiency is preferred, especially Spanish, it is not required for this role.
