POSITION PURPOSE
Under general supervision of the Administrative Director of Laboratory, the Lead Medical Technologist is responsible for various laboratory tests in assigned technical area(s). Researches and utilizes applicable procedures, standards and technical publications in order to work independently. Serves as a technical resource to other staff members in assigned area(s).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

- Completes all required steps in each clinical procedure; prepares, compiles, and reports results per internal procedures. Maintains the operation of assigned technical area(s) to ensure all tests are performed in a clinically effective time frame.
- Calibrates various analyzers and runs daily standards and quality assurance samples, making adjustments as necessary, and performs operator maintenance.
3. Conducts routine and complex procedures in assigned area(s) using professional and practical knowledge/training, as well as published and standardized procedures. Performs a variety of chemical and mechanical tests to qualitatively and quantitatively examine the presence of or absence of various constituents in patient samples, including blood, plasma, CSF, and other properly admitted samples.
4. Maintains technical proficiency in all procedures performed in the assigned department(s).
5. Ensures compliance with all quality assurance and quality control directives and guidelines; notifies director of any uncorrected issues.
6. Implements new tests and methods according to prescribed procedures and requirements of the Medical Director.
7. Performs maintenance as operationally defined; notifies director of any identified issues.
8. Performs Quality Control (QC) as operationally defined; evaluates each QC test and takes corrective action as needed. Submits QC for peer group comparison as appropriate. Reviews QC in all assigned areas on a daily and monthly basis; takes appropriate actions based on findings
9. Troubleshoots test and/or analyzer issues using prescribed methods and critical thinking skills.
10. Stewardship for all laboratory equipment and supplies; maintains an orderly and neat work area. Conducts supply inventory in assigned area(s) and ensures adequate supplies are available daily.
11. Serves as a resource to other staff, ensuring technical proficiency in all procedures performed in the assigned department(s). Assigns duties to subordinate personnel as needed.
12. Accepts assignments to other sections or shifts as necessary. As workload dictates, both assigned shift and work station may be changed. Offers assistance to other sections when need to manage workloads.
13. Communicates effectively and professionally at all times. Keeps staff apprised of all information affecting department operations. Conducts training for new staff and provides ongoing education.
14. Assists in analysis and comparison of established as well as proposed procedures and develops additional procedures as required for review and adoption by the department. Maintains current and accurate policies and procedures for assigned area(s).
15. Continually evaluates operations and makes recommendations for performance improvement in assigned area(s).
16. Provides training to other personnel as necessary; evaluates results and certifies technical competence of those trained.
17. Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct and all HMH policies.
18. Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
19. Maintains a safe work environment, follows all safety precautions and reports safety concerns appropriately. Continually evaluates area to ensure safe environment.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS
All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members. Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Associates degree in Medical Lab Technology required. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology preferred.
Experience: Two years of hospital laboratory experience required
Licensure/Certification: Current MLT (ASCP) or equivalent required. MT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent: sitting, standing, walking, & reaching.
Occasional: lifting, carrying, bending, & squatting,
Visual and hearing acuity required; color vision required for perceiving colors of solutions. Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.
Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
