To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking a Market Operations QSE Manager who will be responsible for assisting the setup of a Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) desk and then supporting its daily operations for the trading and dispatching of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in power markets, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. This individual will have the opportunity to make a quantifiable impact on company P&L working within Jupiter’s front office alongside other traders, analysts, regulatory staff, and data science team. This position will be part of a growing Trading desk managing operating assets in ERCOT with expansion into CAISO, PJM, MISO, NYISO and NEPOOL.
Regular duties include (i) tracking and communicating required actions and procedures for compliance with ISO market operations requirements, (ii) support the Trading/Dispatching team to understand & implement new market rules and regulations that impact portfolio operations, and (iii) manage relationship with the MMS vendor to support the trading and dispatch of BESS assets in the Day-Ahead Energy, Real-Time Energy and Ancillary Service Markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Ongoing understanding and tracking of applicable market rules and practices to ensure Jupiter’s BES market operations comply with ISO, PUC & NERC rules and standards.
- Assists in the development of procedures and guidelines for the Trading team and Real-Time desk to ensure they are meeting the requirements of a fully functional QSE in ERCOT.
- Apply indepth ISO/ERCOT market operations knowledge to support the analysis and implementation of market strategies. Maintain this knowledge base as market structures evolve.
- Work internally with the Regulatory team, Trading/Scheduling team, Settlements team and externally with System Operators to understand BES participation in the market and find creative solutions to changing market structures.
- Manage the relationship with the MMS vendor to ensure the system is functioning to meet Jupiter business needs, including troubleshooting of issues and scoping of system requirements
- Work with Jupiter SCADA team, ISO personnel, and the Jupiter Trading team to facilitate the commissioning of new sites and ensure they are properly set up for full market participation.
- Maintain a relationship with our ISO Client Representative to support asset onboarding and ongoing support for asset operations and reporting.
- Identify areas of non-compliance and conduct analysis to recommend improvements in internal processes and controls.
- Assist internal Applications team to design BES portfolio applications & software in adherence to market operations requirements.
Requirements
- Two or more years in ERCOT power market operations such as control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling, energy manager or asset management.
- Working knowledge in one or more ISOs preferred (ERCOT, CAISO, WECC, SPP, MISO, PJM, IESO, NYISO, ISONE)
- A degree(s) in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, electrical power distribution, electrical power generation, or relevant field
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a high stress environment while managing time in sometimes rapidly changing situations
- Demonstrates high standards in risk management, performance management, relationships with relevant 3rd parties and clients, communication, analysis, decision making, and legal & regulatory compliance
- Self-starter with a high comfort level with fast-moving organizations, with the curiosity and enthusiasm to innovate and formulate new ideas and to bring the best out of co-workers.
