Position Summary
We are completing the process of spinning off from our fiscal sponsor; we have grown rapidly and are now a $45-50 million/year organization. We are now building our own in-house Finance team for the first time and the Controller role is one of our first finance hires.
The Controller will play a pivotal role in managing the financial health of Rewiring America. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller will oversee all finance, accounting, and compliance activities. This position involves working closely with program leaders, ensuring compliance with philanthropic and federal funding requirements, and maintaining effective financial systems.
What You’ll Do
Management:
- Supervise contractors and vendors responsible for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
- Manage an upcoming transition from outsourced accounting support to internal staff capacity
Accounting
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Supervise the organization’s A/P and A/R functions
- Oversee the organization's payroll function, verifying the accuracy of payroll as well as the proper filing of all payroll tax returns and payroll tax deposits.
- Manage the month and year-end accounting closing processes
- Manage our organization’s expense management platform and vendor payments
Financial Oversight and Compliance:
- Maintain internal controls for revenue, costs, and program budgets
- Develop and uphold policies & procedures
- Ensure expense allocations are correctly applied across all financial systems.
- Coordinate audit activities and liaise with external auditors.
- Ensure IRS and other tax reporting requirements are met, including managing 990 filing processes.
Cash Management:
- Manage cash flow, forecasting, and banking relationships.
- Balance risk and return via cash and investment management, tracking performance in accordance with investment guidelines from the Board of Directors.
Collaboration and Integration:
- Work closely with program leaders to educate them on finance and accounting procedures.
- Explore ways the finance function can support program operations.
- Partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and HR/IT staff to enhance integration across functions.

Requirements
The successful candidate thrives in a fast growing organization. A clear track record of performance and adaptability in changing environments is critical. The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:
Core
- Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive financial management experience.
- Knowledge of federal funding regulations
- Strong team management and leadership skills.
- Clear, persuasive communicator.
- Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality as a member of the Finance team
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA certification
- Experience architecting and interfacing with NetSuite
Benefits
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 USD, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (15 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment. Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment.
