Position Summary
Rewiring America is in a phase of rapid growth, and we seek an entrepreneurial Director of Planning and Performance to join our Chief of Staff & Operations team. This position reports to the Chief of Staff, Vice President of Operations and Planning.
In partnership with the Vice President, the Director of Planning and Performance moves our organization's mission forward by driving and optimizing our strategic planning processes and performance management systems. In this role, you will work closely with senior leadership, staff, and external partners to ensure alignment with our mission, vision, and values while maximizing our impact and operational efficiency.
The Director of Planning and Performance plays a pivotal role in facilitating Rewiring America’s strategic planning process and measuring our progress against it through our use of OKRs. This includes supporting senior leadership retreats with programming and creating reporting dashboards to elevate strategic insights and choice points.
This role requires a unique blend of skills. You’re a wizard with spreadsheets, processes, and systems thinking. You juggle all the balls while hopping on one foot twirling a hula hoop, never drop a detail, and find it fun. You do this while possessing a deep understanding and passion for people. You are both a performance dashboard virtuoso that translates data into tangible insights and a people-reader that inspires collaboration and team engagement to achieve our goals. You bring expertise in organizational development and management best practices and the emotional intelligence of having moved people through systems change.
What You’ll Do
As the Director, Planning and Performance, you will collaborate closely with the Chief of Staff, Vice President of Operations and Planning to improve organizational effectiveness by:
- Optimizing our strategic planning process. This includes supporting programming for leadership retreats and collaborating across teams to develop annual Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
- Evolving and further developing our performance measurement system. This includes tracking and enhancing reporting against our Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), delivering performance insights to our leadership team.
This role also serves as a pivotal bridge between our multidisciplinary teams spanning the public and private sectors, including creative, communications, research, product and engineering, and policy. It is a culture creator and carrier for how we organize and facilitate our organizational strategy across our people.
Strategic Planning:
- In partnership with the Chief of Staff, Vice President of Operations and Planning, improve strategic planning efficacy, incorporating best practices from OKRs, KPIs, DACIs/MOCHAs, SMART goals, and other management tools.
- Collaborate with the senior leadership and stakeholders to develop and implement annual OKRs, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and long-term goals.
- Support the Chief of Staff, VP of Operations and Planning in creating content for leadership reports and retreats.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, incorporating best practices from the field of management consulting. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement process enhancements.
Performance Management:
- Develop and maintain a robust performance management framework with clear metrics, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms, emphasizing data visualization.
- Conduct quantitative analysis to assess program effectiveness, efficiency, and impact.
- Work closely with program managers and function leaders to establish performance targets and facilitate performance improvement initiatives. Drive OKR reporting across teams to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Quantitative Analysis and Data Visualization:
- Create visually compelling performance dashboards and reports to communicate key performance metrics and insights to stakeholders. Elevate strategic choice points and recommend adjustments as needed, leveraging quantitative analysis.
- Use data visualization tools and techniques to make complex information accessible and actionable.
- Perform in-depth quantitative analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement in program outcomes and organizational performance.
- Utilize statistical methods and modeling to support decision-making.
Systems Efficacy:
- Evaluate and enhance organizational systems and processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities for automation and optimization in data collection and reporting.
Continuous Learning:
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices in planning, performance, and data analytics, integrating them into our organizational strategies.
Requirements
Who You Are
The Director, Planning and Performance will be instrumental in improving our strategic planning processes and enhancing our data-informed decision-making discipline. We are looking for someone who excels in planning and performance management, is proficient in data analysis and visualization, and has a results-driven mindset. The selected candidate should embody the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:
Core Qualifications:
- 10+ years of work experience including roles involving planning, performance management, business intelligence, technology, or related fields.
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities, with a capacity to convey complex information clearly across a variety of leaders and stakeholders.
- High emotional intelligence and excellent interpersonal skills, fostering collaborative work with cross-functional teams.
- Skill in defining and selecting appropriate performance metrics aligned with organizational goals and objectives. This involves understanding key performance indicators (KPIs), setting benchmarks, and establishing measurement criteria.
- Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem solving skills.
- Proven expertise in data visualization tools and techniques.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a knack for handling complex data sets.
Preferred:
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in business, organizational development, computer sciences, statistics, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus, but not required.
- Proficiency in data visualization tools like Tableau or PowerBI.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as SQL, Python, and/or R.
- Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence (EQ), recognizing that data represents the actions and experiences of individuals - hearts and minds are key to achieving the best outcomes!

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 USD, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (15 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment. Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment.
