Reporting to the Vice President, Thought Leadership, the Managing Director, Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive communications and events strategies that amplify Echoing Green's global impact, influence and enhance its branding, and engage with diverse stakeholders. Managing a dynamic team including a Director, Marketing & Communications and a Director, Events, this role ensures that Echoing Green's message resonates across a global audience, driving forward the organization's vision for social change and innovation.
What You’ll Do
As the Managing Director, Communications, you will lead key work streams that include:
Leading Process
- Collaborate with department leaders to integrate communication and event strategies across the organization, ensuring cohesive messaging and brand alignment.
- Build, audit, and iterate on operational systems to improve team effectiveness and efficiency in collaboration with VP, Thought Leadership
- Set standards and policies to streamline the department's operations, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.
- Drive progress against key milestones by developing and maintaining integrated project plans, resource plans, and risk and issue management plans.
- Support Directors to monitor and manage departmental budgets, allocating resources strategically to support key initiatives and maximize impact.
Leading Strategy
- Partner with VP, Thought Leadership, departmental Directors, and other internal stakeholders to develop, refine, and prioritize strategies for Communications, Marketing, Thought Leadership, and Events in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan
- Develop and execute a dynamic marketing and communication strategy that amplifies Echoing Green's mission, initiatives, and impact on a global scale.
- Collaborate with VP, Programs and VP, Development in the creation of materials, talking points, and multimedia for small- and large-scale events.
- Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership regarding high-stakes public affairs opportunities and reputation management issues to mitigate risk and advance organizational goals; develop crisis communications protocols and response strategies.
- Oversee the production of high-quality, impactful content across multiple platforms, ensuring consistency with our brand's voice and mission.
- Leverage events as a key platform for storytelling, ensuring they are strategically aligned with our communication efforts to promote Echoing Green’s mission and enhance stakeholder engagement.
Leading People
- Manage, inspire, develop and encourage a team of 6 on the implementation of new strategies and initiatives critical to meeting the goals of Echoing Green’s strategic plan.
- As part of the Leadership Team, provide recommendations on how to position Echoing Green as a globally minded organization by translating and amplifying the insights of our work across the social innovation field.
- Build and maintain key relationships, ensuring our communications strategies effectively engage our diverse stakeholders from fellows to funders and beyond.
Requirements
What You’ll Bring
- At least 10 years of relevant experience, including leading and managing a distributed and layered team, experience working at a purpose-driven global or national organization, and demonstrated success building and implementing strategic communications and events to enhance and elevate a brand, especially within the context of social innovation.
- Global-minded perspective to adeptly work across multicultural contexts and in service to an international network of fellows, organizational partners, leaders and staff
- Experience handling media relations with an eye for opportunities and risks, as well as the ability to identify the story and generate interest and enthusiasm for Echoing Green’s work
- Unwavering attention to detail in all aspects of communication and event planning, from proofreading marketing materials to meticulous oversight of event logistics, ensuring a high-quality brand experience.
- Hands-on expertise in marketing databases & CRM tools including Salesforce, digital marketing platforms like Campaign Monitor, events management platforms like Blackthorn.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills.
- A bold collaborator with strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills who can effectively influence and engage colleagues at all levels and across lines of difference; Someone who can listen, process and reconcile needs and demands, and who is comfortable with saying no and building consensus.
- A big-picture thinker who can take a systems view, while also bringing a willingness to “get in the weeds” to troubleshoot and, at times, provide front-line customer service to colleagues across the organization.
- An effective communicator, spokesperson and thought partner who works successfully with people at all levels of an organization.
- Commitment to fostering a team environment characterized by collaboration, positivity, and a shared commitment to Echoing Green’s mission, with a focus on professional growth and development.
Benefits
Salary: $175,000/year
Echoing Green offers a full benefits package designed to support employee wellness. This includes:

Work Arrangements
The Managing Director role is designed for remote work on a permanent basis. The role is available to candidates residing anywhere based in the United States, though the Managing Director will be expected to be available during standard business hours of 9am-5pm ET.
Based in New York City, Echoing Green is transitioning to a remote-first organization in 2024. Currently, nearly 50% of employees are based in the region and come into the office 2 days/week. Moving forward, Echoing Green will maintain an office space in Manhattan. Employees will be expected to travel 4-8 times/year for meetings or in-person team retreats, often in New York City, and will have the opportunity to attend annual Fellow convenings around the globe.
