Position Overview
The Controller reports to the Executive Vice President and manages a small accounting team. This position oversees the financial operations of the company and makes sure the financial statements are accurate and complete. The Controller works closely with the Executive Vice President and leadership to drive transformative change and set Lane Press apart from others in the magazine publishing sector.
This position ensures the financial functions operate efficiently and comply with applicable laws and generally accepted accounting principles. They prepare budgets and forecasts, oversee AP and AR, implement process improvements, and complete month end and year end processing. The position is approximately 60% tactical and 40% strategic.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversees all accounting transactions to properly reflect GAAP.
- Reviews cash flow regularly and provides updates and guidance to leadership regarding cash management.
- Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
- Produces the annual budget and forecasts in collaboration with leadership. Reports significant variances to leadership.
- Collaborates with leadership to use financials, forecasts, and budgets to drive strategy.
- Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with GAAP.
- Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
- Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
- Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the annual audit.
- Determines ways to improve systems and automation and implemented necessary changes.
- Establish and maintain effective banking relationships in collaboration with leadership.
- Manage audit-related criteria as mandated by federal and state regulations.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
- Completes month end and year end processing. Posts and reviews monthly journal entries.
- Oversees the accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll functions to ensure effectiveness.
- Processes payroll when needed.
- Manages the accounting team and provides training and feedback to advance their professional development.
- Aligns information from disparate systems.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration is required.
- MBA or CPA is a plus.
- Minimum of ten years or more of related experience required.
- Strong business background is required.
- Manufacturing background is preferred.
- Strong cash management skills.
- Proficient in accounting software. Experience with Monarch is a plus.
- Strong Excel skills including pivot tables and advanced functions.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Strong process improvement skills.
- Excellent leadership skills.
