Full Job Description
The District will have the following summer employment opportunities for those students who are eligible and qualified (see attached guidelines for additional information). The term of employment for these positions is approximately 3 months and may begin as early as mid-May (depending on school schedules). The following positions are available:
- Occupational Safety Assistant - This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. The primary responsibilities for this position will be to travel throughout the District to conduct and document Safety Inspections, job hazard analysis’, coordinate emergency action plan training, and assist in the development of plans and procedures. Interest in occupational health and safety is preferred Individuals must have good math (Calculus) skills, be familiar with computers, possess an understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows 10 or Windows 11, and be detail oriented with good communications skills. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Pay rate: $18.87/hr.
- Records Retention Clerk - This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. and is primarily office work focusing on digitizing the PUD’s paper records. Work includes organizing, indexing, scanning, and logging archived documents and drawings per the PUD’s established archival system. Individuals will work closely with the PUD’s Human Resources, Engineering, and Accounting departments and will include assignments for other departments. This is repetitive work. Individuals must be familiar with computers, possess an understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows 10 or Windows 11, and be detail oriented with good communications skills. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Pay rate: $18.87/hr.
- Brush Crew - This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Line Crew Headquarters Building in Newport, WA. Brush crew members will work alongside District line construction and vegetation maintenance crews, responsible for clearing brush and small trees within power line easements and other rights-of-way. Crew members will be responsible for vegetation cleanup after District line/vegetation maintenance crews remove larger trees/branches. Crew members will also be responsible for safety flagging duties on state/county roadways for the line/maintenance crews. This is physically demanding work, requiring the ability to safely operate a chain saw and mobile chipping machine for extended time periods. Work is performed outdoors under a variety of summer weather and terrain conditions. Individuals must be able to regularly stand, walk, climb, lift/carry and work under outdoor conditions of ongoing and significant physical exertion. Brush crew members must be able to work safely and sometimes independently – must be self-starting and demonstrate good judgment on a continuous basis. Strict adherence to OSHA/WISHA standards and District safety procedures and practices is required. Hours are 6:00 am – 4:30 p.m., Monday through-Thursday, or 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Pay rate: $22.99/hr.
- Line Crew Helper/Warehouseman This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Line Crew Headquarters Building in Newport, WA. This position will be split between the two areas of responsibility as needed. As a line crew helper the individual will be organizing and cleaning trucks, flagging, spotting, operating a shovel, delivering tools, equipment, and materials to job sites. As a warehouseman the individual will assist in maintaining the overall physical condition and appearance of the warehouse including stocking of parts/inventory items and loading/unloading various materials, sometimes involving the use of a forklift and District vehicles as well as grounds and building maintenance for the Administration Headquarters facility. Other tasks will require the use of power landscaping equipment and power/hand tools. Training will be provided as needed. Moderate (and sometimes rigorous) physical exertion will be required; work occurs both indoors and outdoors, under a variety of summer weather conditions. Hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday, or 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Pay rate: $18.87/hr.
- Maintenance, Box Canyon - This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be located at the Box Canyon hydroelectric project in Ione WA. Maintenance workers perform general grounds/facilities maintenance and cleanup at Box Canyon Dam and several off-site locations. The position involves driving/operating pick-up trucks, small maintenance vehicles and a variety of power equipment/tools in the course of completing various job duties. Individual must be a self-starter and able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work will be required in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments. Normal working hours are 6:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $18.87/hr.
- Records Retention Clerk, Box Canyon - This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the PUD’s Box Canyon Hydroelectric Visitor’s Center in Ione, WA and is primarily office work focusing on digitizing the PUD’s paper records. Work includes organizing, indexing, scanning, and logging archived documents and drawings per the PUD’s established archival system. This is repetitive work requiring a fine attention to detail, and familiarity with basic computer functions and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel). Individual will also provide tours to facility guests, which will require walking over various terrain, including stairs, the ability to engage in conversation with guests, discuss the facility history and answer questions. May infrequently be required to operate a motor vehicle. Normal working hours are 8:00 – 4:30 Monday – Friday. Pay rate: $18.87/hr.
Requirements
Students who wish to work for the District must demonstrate a firm commitment to attend post-secondary schooling at an accredited facility on a full-time basis.
· All applicants must be 18 years of age and eligible to work in the United States.
· For initial employment, a resume and cover letter must accompany the employment application.
· Along with the application and resume, three written references must be provided: one work-related, one school-related and one personal.
· All applicants (new and returning) must provide the District with a current grade transcript. Students must demonstrate a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average in order to be considered for employment. The transcript must also validate continuous, full-time attendance at the institution of record.
· If the student has not yet begun their post-secondary education (i.e., high school seniors), they need to provide proof of acceptance to a college, university, trade school or other accredited facility. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student.
Please note: Returning students do not need to re-submit a resume and references, but they do need to complete a new employment application, possess a valid state driver’s license, provide evidence of satisfactory academic performance, and be enrolled for the upcoming fall quarter/semester.
